About the Ideal Clinic Programme

The Ideal Clinic Realisation and Maintenance (ICRM) programme is a national initiative by the South African National Department of Health to systematically improve the quality of primary healthcare facilities. Each clinic is assessed against a standardised set of criteria covering service delivery, infrastructure, human resources, clinical processes, and patient experience.

Facilities achieving a score of 70% or above on the assessment tool receive Ideal Clinic status, with further tiering into Silver (70-79%), Gold (80-89%), and Platinum (90%+) levels. The programme is directly relevant to climate-health surveillance as it measures the capacity of frontline facilities to respond to climate-sensitive health emergencies.
